Craft District

 BACKGROUND

In 2019, the Port of Chelan invested $4.5 million to purchase nine buildings totaling roughly 130,000 square feet that bridge the downtown Wenatchee core to the waterfront. The buildings were historically used for cold storage and fruit packing activities. The Port’s intent was to subdivide the property and get it back in the hands of the private sector.  We have engaged with a handful of private developers to take on portions of the redevelopment, but no one has been successful.  The cost of the needed improvements to transform the buildings into a new use outweighs the revenue that they could generate.  Based on the success of the neighboring Pybus Market and initiatives in the Our Valley, Our Future Action Plans, the Port is planning to redevelop the north section of the property into a brewery anchored creative district – Trackside Craft District. We are envisioning a vibrant district that integrates breweries/wineries/cideries, food, music/art, and other creative sectors which will offer a variety of experiences for visitors of all ages.

Why The Focus on The Creative Sector?

The Creative Economy has long been underappreciated, yet it serves as the cornerstone of our state's economy. Its substantial contribution of $119.2 billion represents a remarkable 10.3% of our state's GDP, holding the title of being the nation's leader. In comparison, California, a distant second, trails with a GDP contribution of 7.5%. Employing over 180,000 individuals, this sector thrives across various domains, including creative technology, architecture, fashion, culinary arts, and performing arts. Wenatchee does not currently have a dedicated arts district. What better location to develop one than in a place that connects the downtown core with the beautiful waterfront?

The Washington State Department of Commerce released their Strategic Plan and has identified $20 million in investments to grow and strengthen the creative economy. Funding will be available for projects just like this!
